Surendra Shah, MD, Memorialized at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Carbon

Beloved hematologist oncologist remembered for compassionate patient care

Lehigh Valley Hospital–Carbon hosted a dedication event today to celebrate the life and career of hematologist oncologist Surendra Shah, MD.

Shah, who passed away in April 2022, treated individuals with cancer in the Lehigh Valley for nearly 40 years. He joined Lehigh Valley Physician Group in 2014 after more than 30 years of private practice in Lehighton and Palmerton. A dedicated physician and patient advocate, he was especially passionate about providing individuals in rural areas access to the latest cancer treatments and standards of care.

“Dr. Shah was not only a phenomenal physician, but a truly amazing person as well,” says Suresh Nair, MD, Physician in Chief, Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute. “He cared deeply about his patients and treated them as though they were his own family. His dedication to and love for the hematology oncology field has left a lasting impression on me and will continue to serve as inspiration throughout my career.”

“Dr. Shah’s spirit of optimism and hope lives on in everyone who knew him, and the impact he had on his patients’ lives and our overall community will be remembered for many years to come.” - Terrence Purcell, President, LVHN Northwest Region

At the event, Nair, Terrence Purcell, President, LVHN Northwest Region, and Shah’s son, Sapan, spoke about Shah’s career and the lives he touched throughout the region. A bench (built and donated by students and faculty at the Carbon Career and Technical Institute) was also dedicated to Shah and placed on the hospital’s campus.

“Dr. Shah’s spirit of optimism and hope lives on in everyone who knew him, and the impact he had on his patients’ lives and our overall community will be remembered for many years to come,” Purcell says.
