Two Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) physicians are currently serving in top leadership roles on their respective boards of directors in their specialties.

Steven Lewis, MD, is serving as Chair of The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. (ABPN) from now through June. Dr. Lewis holds the Timothy M. Breidegam Endowed Chair in Neurology at LVHN. He is certified by the ABPN in Neurology and Vascular Neurology and participates in continuing certification.

"Being a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) for the past eight years has been a highlight of my professional career,” Dr. Lewis says. “I am so honored to now be elected as Chair for the next six months and entrusted to lead my esteemed colleagues on the ABPN Board – all of whom are recognized national leaders in neurology and psychiatry clinical care, education, and research – in ensuring the highest standards of certification for neurologists and psychiatrists, and the provision of high-quality neurologic and psychiatric care, in the United States."

Thomas McLoughlin Jr., MD, has been elected president of the American Board of Anesthesiology.  Dr. McLoughlin is chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at LVHN and a professor of surgery in the Division of Surgical Anesthesiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine.

"It is a privilege to serve as President of the American Board of Anesthesiology where I have the opportunity to give back and help to shape the future of the specialty that means so much to me,” Dr. McLoughlin says.

He says the board offers rigorous and evolving assessments leading to initial certification in anesthesiology and its subspecialties. He also cites leadership in introducing longitudinal testing to help physicians stay at their best throughout their careers and notes that work continues to further innovate continuing certification tools, focusing on relevant and lifelong learning. “Our assessments help us to deliver on our mission to advance the highest standards of the practice of our specialty. Working alongside my fellow Directors and the talented ABA staff, we know we are making a lasting impact that we can be proud of.”

Dr. Lewis also serves as Secretary General of the World Federation of Neurology (WFN), as Chair of the WFN Education Committee, and serves as the Editor of World Neurology. In 2019, Lewis was the recipient of the A.B. Baker Award for Lifetime Achievement in Neurologic Education from the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), and in 2023 was the recipient of the American Neurological Association (ANA) Award for Excellence in Education.

Dr. McLoughlin's clinical practice emphasizes cardiothoracic anesthesiology, and he is a diplomate of the National Board of Echocardiography in advanced perioperative transesophageal echocardiography. Dr. McLoughlin serves as a director of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and is a member of the Anesthesiology Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Anesthesiology.
