For many moms, the end of breastfeeding can bring a mix of emotions: relief, sadness, pride, guilt, excitement, and even grief. That's because weaning is more than just a feeding transition. It's the closing of one chapter of motherhood and the beginning of another.
But before focusing on the end, lactation consultant Leila Nassar, with Lehigh Valley Health Network, part of Jefferson Health, wants moms to remember one thing: You did an amazing job.
“Any amount of breast milk you give to your child is phenomenal,” Nassar says. “As a lactation consultant and a mom, I've had emotional conversations with so many mothers, and I remind them over and over again of the incredible job they did, just for starting breastfeeding and for giving their babies breast milk – no matter how long the journey lasted."
