  4. Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction (BLVR)

If you have severe COPD or emphysema, you may struggle to catch your breath while doing everyday tasks. This is because the damaged parts of your lungs have lost their ability to release trapped air and have become overinflated. Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) places tiny, one-way valves that allow trapped air to be exhaled and prevents more air from becoming trapped. This helps you breathe better and do more in life.

Zephyr valves are tiny, one-way valves that allow the trapped air to be exhaled from your lungs and prevent more air from becoming trapped there, allowing you to breathe better and do more.

The valves are placed via bronchoscopy, with no incision or cutting, so benefits are achieved without many of the risks of traditional surgical options. The procedure is usually complete in under an hour.

Who can benefit from BLVR?

Only a BLVR-trained physician can determine if you are a candidate. You may be evaluated for BLVR if you:

  • Have a confirmed diagnosis of COPD or emphysema
  • Have to stop to catch their breath often, even with taking their medication as directed
  • Have reduced lung function (FEV1≤50% predicted)

Next steps

Reach out to your primary care doctor or pulmonologist to discuss whether you would benefit from bronchoscopic lung volume reduction.
