  2. Pilonidal Care Program

The Pilonidal Care Program at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of pilonidal disease.

Pilonidal disease is a chronic infection of the skin in the crease between the buttocks just below the tailbone. The condition can occur when hair follicles in this area become plugged with hair and debris. If infection and irritation under the skin continue, a tract (pilonidal sinus) may form. Once a pilonidal sinus is present, hair may move into the tract and establish a nest of hair under the skin.  This may become infected and become a pilonidal abscess.

Individualized care plans

Pilonidal disease can be difficult to treat, and in certain cases, it can result in multiple infections and recurrences. Because of this, the condition requires careful evaluation and treatment recommendations based on the specific needs of each child.

Our specialists have vast experience treating pilonidal disease and evaluate each patient on an individual basis, developing specialized care plans that will offer the best chance of continued relief and resolution.

Treatment options for pilonidal disease

We offer several preventive, non-surgical and surgical treatment options for this condition. You and your child will meet with a member of our care team, who will then develop a treatment plan that may include:

  • Drainage
  • Antibiotics
  • An updated hygiene regimen
  • Laser hair removal
  • Minimally invasive excision (called a “trephination” procedure)
  • Additional surgery for more complex conditions
