Anesthesiology Residency Curriculum

PGY-1 (12 months)

• 6 months of Fundamental Clinical Skills (FCS) rotations*
• 1-2 months of critical care, emergency medicine 
• 2 months of LVHN program-required non-FCS:
  • Radiology (1 month)
  • Neurology (1 month)

*The FCS months include general surgery, surgical intensive care, pediatrics, internal medicine, and a month in a subspecialty of internal medicine.

In the latter half of the PGY-1 year, after the residents have completed many or all required FCS months, residents will finally be able to start learning about anesthesiology clinically in the operating rooms under direct supervision (1:1 supervision ratio) by fully credentialed and board-certified anesthesiologists.

 PGY-2 – PGY-4 (36 months)

A 36-month clinical anesthesia (CA) experience in all the subspecialty fields of anesthesiology. Residents are also referred to as CA-1, CA-2, or CA-3 in these three years. 

• 3 months of Basic Surgical Anesthesia
• 2 months of Advanced Surgical Anesthesia
• 5 months of Night Float Call System
• Anesthesiology subspecialty months with the following minimums:
  • Thoracic Anesthesia (1 month)
  • Vascular Anesthesia (1 month)
  • Obstetric Anesthesia (2 months)
  • Neuro-Anesthesia (2 months)
  • Pediatric Anesthesia (2 months)
  • Cardiothoracic Anesthesia (2 months)
  • Acute Perioperative Pain Medicine & Regional Anesthesia (2 months)
  • Chronic Interventional Pain Medicine (1 month)
