At the Children's Cancer and Multipurpose Infusion Center, we know how difficult the transition to outpatient cancer treatment can be for your child and family. Our team of experts is here to support you throughout every stage of your child's treatment journey and will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you have.

What to expect in the clinic

When you first come into the clinic, you will check in at the front desk and wait for a staff member to come get you. Most kids will then stop in our vitals room to have their weight, height and blood pressure taken before going to an exam room for a check-up. Blood work will sometimes be taken in the exam room, but other times, it will be done in the room where ports are accessed. Certain procedures, like lumbar punctures and bone marrow biopsies, are done in a special room in the clinic so your child can wake up in a comfortable environment with you or another family member close by. For infusions, your family will be set up in an individual bay with access to a television and video game system. There is also a special room with a bed for children who aren’t feeling well and want to lay down during their infusion.

While you and your child are welcome to stay in your individual bay, we have several exciting crafts and games available in our main activity space. There are also other rooms you and your child can use, including our computer room, family resource room and private consultation room. If you need a snack or drink (like a slushie) during your time in the clinic, let one of us know. We can also help you order meals from the hospital cafeteria.

You May Hear

There are many terms you will hear in the clinic. To become familiar with some common phrases, we recommend reading the Children’s Oncology Group’s family handbook. If you have any questions about the words you hear during your visit, please let us know. We are always happy to explain them to you.

Managing mental health at home

It’s common for children to experience stress and anxiety even when they aren’t in the clinic.

To support your child through these feelings and offer tips for managing them, Weller Health Education at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital developed the following video:
