For men diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), monitoring their urine flow is a critical diagnostic tool. Before now, this was often an uncomfortable and time-consuming process that required making an appointment at the urologist’s office and timing things just right so you arrived with a full bladder.

Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) is pleased to be first in our region to offer Emano Flow, a simple smartphone app people use in the privacy of their home to monitor urinary flow. Accurate results are automatically uploaded to their care team.

A more comfortable process, with better results

“Whereas the in-office flow is a one-time, single-flow test, Emano Flow aggregates a patient’s voiding pattern over a week,” urologist James Johannes, MD, says. “This produces more accurate, real-life flow data, all from the comfort of their home.”

Emano Flow vastly improves the patient experience and delivers more accurate results to clinicians, all while streamlining workflow for staff and making the entire process more efficient. Since March, Dr. Johannes, Alexis Brown, PA-C, and Jaylon Snyder, PA-C, have been testing Emano Flow with patients requiring a uroflow. Patients who opted in received a text message welcoming them to create an account.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common condition where the prostate gland enlarges and can cause urinary symptoms. Monitoring the urinary flow provides clinicians with a baseline for a person’s voiding symptoms. They use this information to create personalized treatment plans and evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of the treatment. With the data they can also uncover underlying disorders such as nocturnal polyuria, which is commonly caused by undiagnosed sleep apnea or heart issues.

Additional conditions where Emano Flow may be used include urinary incontinence, urinary frequency, urinary dribbling, urinary disorders and nocturia.

Expanding Emano Flow beyond urology

Emano Flow will be expanded to all LVHN men’s health clinicians and incorporated into standard guidelines for treating BPH. In the future it could be a tool for telehealth and to help in underserved areas.

More far-reaching implications in the future might include use by primary care clinicians as a screening tool for men with urinary complaints.
