LVHN's Neurology Residency trains future leaders in clinical and academic neurology. Through the course of the training program, residents achieve progressively greater independence and autonomy. There is a different emphasis in each of the three years of training; however, all three years of training have designated elective and research time as well as outpatient resident continuity clinic time.
During the first year (PGY2), the majority of the resident's experience is spent in managing patients admitted to the hospital, who present to the General Neurology Service with neurological disease or disorders. Additional time is spent with the Epilepsy Service, as well as with neuro-ophthalmology and psychiatry. In the second (PGY3) year, there also is an emphasis on general neurology, but during this year PGY3s are acting as the supervising resident on service. Additionally, PGY3 residents spend time on the pediatric neurology, neurophysiology and neuroradiology services, and have further elective time (for example in headache and facial pain, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, neuromuscular disease, neuropathology and others) to pursue their research or clinical interests.
In the third (PGY4) year, the focus is spent supervising the inpatient stroke and neuroscience ICU services, as well as participating in outpatient clinics, electives and research. Rotations in this year are designed to further expose neurology residents to a large volume of complex neurological patient care issues.
Residents' schedules will allow for teaching opportunities (such as journal club, noon clinical case conference, morbidity and mortality conferences), and a neurology educational lecture series focused on neurology board exam preparation. Residents also will be required to engage in formal clinical research opportunities and will be expected to prepare their research for publication in a peer-reviewed neurology journal.
