Mommy Makeovers

Childbirth and breastfeeding take a permanent toll on women’s bodies, but “mommy makeover” procedures can help women reclaim their pre-baby bodies in a way that diet and exercise alone cannot achieve.

What is a mommy makeover?

Mommy makeover is an expression that describes a combination of body-contouring procedures intended to revitalize a woman’s body. Lehigh Valley Health Network’s (LVHN) board-certified plastic surgeons perform these procedures in a single, staged operation, addressing the areas you desire to change:

Breast augmentation

If padded, underwire and push-up bras just aren’t cutting it, breast augmentation may be the solution for your undersized breasts. Also called augmentation mammoplasty, this procedure involves placing saline-filled or silicone gel-filled implants into the breast tissue to supplement the shape. This outpatient surgery typically lasts one hour, and may also be combined with a breast lift procedure.

Breast lift

Mastopexy, or breast lift surgery, aims to reduce sagging that may result from aging, pregnancy, weight fluctuation or heredity. In a same-day surgical procedure that lasts from one to three hours, the plastic surgeon raises the breasts by removing excess skin. This procedure will help the breasts look fuller without adding volume and restores a more youthful profile. Breast lift may also be combined with breast augmentation surgery if more volume is desired.

Upper arm lift (brachioplasty)

When you shop for clothes, are sleeves a "must have" consideration? If you hide your arms because sagging skin makes you feel self-conscious, speak to our plastic surgeons about an upper arm lift. This procedure targets excess fat and skin in the upper arm area using both surgical techniques and liposuction. An upper arm lift is done on an outpatient basis and usually takes two to four hours.

Liposuction (lipoplasty)

Diets, sit-ups and even utmost will-power sometimes cannot budge stubborn pockets of fat. Liposuction offers a targeted way to slim down troublesome areas, such as your tummy or thighs. Your surgeon may use laser-assisted liposuction or traditional tumescent liposuction to remove excessive fatty deposits and contour the areas that concern you.

Liposuction can be done as an in-office procedure or in the outpatient setting. If needed, liposuction may be combined with a procedure to remove excess skin. Surgical time is dependent upon how many areas need to be addressed.

Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

The abdomen can look beautiful and strong – though sometimes it takes more than just Pilates and stomach crunches to slim it down. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases, tightens the abdominal wall muscles. It can also be combined with liposuction to further contour and shape the area. A tummy tuck takes about two hours and usually requires an overnight stay.

Women may be concerned about too much labial skin affecting their urine stream, or too much tissue that is simply uncomfortable. Labiaplasty can be used as a corrective procedure for urination problems, as well as a way to remove and contour skin cosmetically. This outpatient surgery takes about one hour to complete.

Buttock augmentation

Buttock augmentation, or gluteal augmentation, can increase the fullness, roundness and projection of your butt or buttocks, improve the balance of your figure and enhance your self-image and confidence. It is used to improve the contour, size and/or shape of the buttocks. This is done through the use of buttock implants, fat grafting or sometimes a combination of the two.

Buttock implants are silicone-filled devices that are surgically placed deep within the tissues of the buttock.

Buttock lift

A buttock lift or gluteal lift improves the shape and tone of the underlying tissue that supports skin and fat in the buttock area.  Pregnancy, aging, sun damage, weight gain or weight loss and genetic factors may contribute to poor tissue elasticity that can result in the sagging of the buttocks.  To achieve the smoothest results, excess skin and fat are removed.

Brazilian Butt lift

Buttock augmentation can include the use of fat grafting which involves the transfer of fat from one area of the body into the tissues of the buttocks. This technique is sometimes referred to as a Brazilian Butt lift.

Lower body lift

You’ve lost the weight and have made exercise a priority, but the lower half of your body refuses to cooperate with those efforts. A lower body lift addresses sagging skin and fat at the buttocks, hips and thighs. Incisions are made in areas that are either in anatomical folds or areas that would be covered by clothing. This surgery can be combined with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast lift, arm lift (brachioplasty) and/or liposuction. The lower body lift is done as an inpatient procedure, and takes about two to four hours to complete.

Thigh lift

Finding flattering skinny jeans can be aggravating if your thighs are out of proportion with the rest of you.  Depending on your figure, you can select a surgery that focuses on the inner part of the thigh (known as a medial thigh lift) or the outer portion of the thigh, below the hip area (a lateral thigh lift).

Incisions are strategically made to be hidden afterward, and then underlying tissue is reshaped and tightened, resulting in a more proportionate and smoother body contour. This surgery is done on an inpatient basis and takes about two hours to complete.
