Psychiatry Residency FAQs

Frequently asked questions include:

Can I fast track into a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship?

Yes, we permit and support residents interested in child and adolescent psychiatry. In fact, LVHN has a child and adolescent fellowship program, and we would love for you to stay on board with us to complete your training.

Can I moonlight?

Starting in PGY-3, residents in good academic standing have opportunities for internal moonlighting at our LVH–Pocono and LVH–Schuylkill sites. Residents also are able to pursue external moonlighting opportunities which need to be approved by program leadership.

Will I be exposed to therapy during training?

During PGY-1, residents run group therapy sessions on the high and low acuity inpatient psychiatry unit. In PGY-2, residents rotate on two partial hospitalization programs where they are trained in group therapy and have opportunities to lead group therapy sessions. During PGY-3, residents carry at least four cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) patients and one psychodynamic therapy patient. Residents also meet with a PhD-level CBT-trained therapist and a psychodynamic therapy-trained psychiatrist weekly to review patients. During PGY-4, residents have the opportunity to carry one of their therapy patients during their continuity clinic.

How do you support resident wellness outside of work hours?

Our program holds semiannual faculty retreats and provides an annual wellness stipend. Residents can use the stipend on wellness activities that they organize as a collective group and facilitate on their own outside of work hours.

Do you sponsor visas for international medical graduates (IMGs)?

J-1 and H-1B visa sponsorships will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Is clinical or research experience in the United States required to apply?

We do not require clinical or research experience, however this sort of experience will help strengthen an application.

Do you offer clinical shadowing, observerships, externships, etc.?

We do not offer these sorts of experiences at LVHN.
