Support Services

A cancer diagnosis challenges every aspect of your life. At Lehigh Valley Health Network, we are here to help you find answers to the things that concern you during your cancer journey, and will do our best to help heal your body, mind and spirit.

During and after treatment

Cancer rehabilitation

If you are suffering from fatigue, weakness, balance problems, lymphedema or other symptoms related to your condition and treatment, our trained rehabilitation therapists can help provide relief or recommend steps you can take to improve your symptoms.

Cancer Survivorship program

As you near the completion of your treatments you may wonder, “What’s next?” Lehigh Valley Health Network offers the Survivorship Program, a comprehensive follow-up care program designed to help you with the transition to your post-treatment phase.

Genetic risk assessment and counseling

You may be concerned about your family’s risk for cancer, particularly if more than one relative has had a similar health condition. Lehigh Valley Health Network can help assess your family’s inherited risk for developing cancer by utilizing genetic and medical history tools.

Financial concerns and coordination

Our financial coordinators are available at all hospital locations to help minimize the confusion and stress that can be caused by financial concerns. They will answer your questions about health insurance, precertification requirements, medical bills and financial assistance. They may be able to help you receive free or reduced cost services and medicine, as well as access financial aid through cancer support agencies.

To schedule an appointment, call 610-402-7849 or 610-402-1075.

If you or your loved one has reached a point that continued treatment is not a viable option, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s hospice can help you through the last part of life’s journey with dignity and personalized care.

Lymphedema support group

Lymphedema is fluid retention caused by a compromised lymphatic system. It can occur in any body part due to cancer and/or cancer treatment.  Lymphedema therapy can be accessed through the Cancer Rehabilitation page, but LVHN also encourages patients to attend meetings of the Lymphedema Support Group. It meets three times per year and provides a way to connect with other patients who have lymphedema.

Nutrition counseling for cancer patients

Eating well is important when you battle cancer. Our registered dietitian specializes in oncology nutrition and can help you select foods that will nourish you and help maintain your strength through treatment.

Pain management

Managing pain is an important aspect of your care. Lehigh Valley Health Network’s trained pain specialists can help you find the right ways to maintain your comfort.

Palliative care

Palliative care is intended for patients with advanced complex illness. Patients can benefit by having specific symptoms addressed to improve quality of life, whether related to pain or difficulty breathing.

Our pharmacists are specially educated about the medicines used to treat cancer. They prepare medications that are given in the Cancer Center infusion areas and are available to answer your questions. Retail pharmacy services are available at Health Spectrum Pharmacy, Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest on the first floor of the Jaindl Pavilion and at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Muhlenberg, first floor, main hospital. In addition to having your prescriptions filled, you may arrange for home infusion or purchase a variety of items such as nutritional and herbal supplements, ostomy products and diabetic supplies. Fitters are available to assist you with mastectomy supplies (bras, prostheses and bathing suits).

Preparing for breast cancer surgery

This class will help you learn how to better prepare for your surgery so you can be more comfortable and less apprehensive. Learn what to expect after your surgery so you can have a positive recovery experience both in the hospital and at home. We welcome a family member or friend to come with you to the class.

These classes are held weekly both in Allentown and Bethlehem and cover topics including: testing before surgery, what to expect the day of the surgery, care after surgery, support services, home care and long term survivorship. They are taught by a breast-certified nurse navigator, a rehab specialist and a breast cancer survivor.

To register for this class, call 888-402-LVHN.

Sex therapy

Many things change when you have cancer. Some changes cause problems in your closest relationship and with your sex life. Our certified sex therapist can help with these problems in confidential treatment.

Caring for the mind and spirit

Counseling services

A diagnosis of cancer upsets the balance of so many aspects of your life. One part that may not receive enough attention is your own mental well-being.  Our counselors and therapists can help you find ways to manage the emotional rollercoaster cancer puts you on, and provide you with the tools you need to maintain your sense of well-being.

Pastoral care

Spiritual support can help you face difficult news about your illness or find peace in a time of turmoil. Our chaplains are available to help you at your request. We also have a quiet chapel available for meditation and reflection.

Grief support

The loss of a loved one stirs intense emotions; sometimes those feelings are very difficult to cope with. Through our grief support services, we offer several options to help children and adults work through their grief.
