From Student to Supervisor: Why Bonnie Korutz Built Her CT Career at LVHN

CT Supervisor Bonnie Korutz shares how LVHN’s imaging team drives patient care and career growth through advanced technology and teamwork

For nearly 34 years, Bonnie Korutz has been a dedicated member of the imaging team at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). Today, she serves as the CT supervisor at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Cedar Crest, overseeing an essential department that provides rapid, lifesaving imaging in critical situations. See the impact of advanced technology on patient care and why LVHN is the place to grow a rewarding career in imaging.

From student to supervisor

Korutz’s path to radiology began at Bloomsburg University, where she initially planned to become a lab technician. “I wanted to work with patients, and my counselor recommended radiology,” she shares. After completing her training at LVH–17th Street, Korutz worked at Johns Hopkins, where her interest in computed tomography (CT) developed. “CT is like a detailed X-ray. You see so much more intricacy. It’s rewarding because you can directly impact patients who need urgent care.”

Since then, technology has transformed the CT field. “When I started, scanning a head could take 30 minutes. Now, with modern scanners, we can complete a scan in just minutes. It allows us to help more patients faster,” she explains.

Leading a supportive, learning-focused team

As a CT supervisor, Korutz emphasizes teamwork and growth. “I’m here to support my team in learning CT,” she says. LVHN offers unique opportunities for techs right out of school, providing them hands-on experience from day one. Korutz encourages her team members to work independently while she and her experienced staff offer guidance. “They log their hours and prepare for their boards, learning on the job. It’s rewarding to watch them grow.”

“The relationships I’ve built here mean everything to me. LVHN truly feels like home.” - Bonnie Korutz

For those interested in leadership, LVHN provides ample advancement pathways. “I had a tech who started in CT and is now in the cardiac cath lab. We want people to explore and advance,” she notes.

Leading-edge technology at LVHN

LVHN’s commitment to innovation is evident in its imaging department, where state-of-the-art scanners help improve patient outcomes. “We have a top-of-the-line scanner in the emergency department. It’s so fast, it can scan a pelvis in seconds,” Korutz says. “We’re also continually upgrading our equipment, which enhances our ability to provide quality care.”

Teamwork makes the dream work

Korutz describes her team as a close-knit group, always supporting each other to ensure the best patient care. “We rely on each other’s knowledge and experience. There’s no competition, just camaraderie,” she shares. Collaboration extends to other departments too. “We work closely with ICU [intensive care unit] nurses and trauma staff, creating an environment where communication and respect drive patient care. It’s critical that we communicate well.”

Advice for aspiring imaging professionals

For those considering a career in imaging, especially in CT, Korutz’s advice is simple: “Jump in. Find a role where you can learn and grow and you’ll find it incredibly rewarding.” She encourages a hands-on approach and a willingness to try new things to advance in the field.

Korutz’s long tenure at LVHN reflects her passion for the work and the people. “I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else,” she says. “The relationships I’ve built here mean everything to me. LVHN truly feels like home.”

As imaging technology continues to evolve, Korutz looks forward to future advancements, including faster scanners and artificial intelligence technology that will allow for even greater precision in patient care. Her inspiring career at LVHN demonstrates the health network’s dedication to innovation, growth and a supportive patient-centered environment for imaging professionals.
