Prostatectomy is a surgical treatment for prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, also known as enlarged prostate). Lehigh Valley Health Network’s fellowship-trained urologic surgeons are highly skilled in using sophisticated robotics technology. This training helps us offer you outstanding results without a long recovery. Our personalized care approach means we care about what’s important to you – like preserving sexual function after surgery so you can live a full life.

What is a prostatectomy?

A prostatectomy is a surgical procedure to remove part or all of the prostate gland. Doctors may recommend this surgery to treat prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, also known as enlarged prostate).

We use the latest techniques for prostatectomy, including open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery. We offer:

  • Open prostatectomy: A surgeon makes a large incision in the lower abdomen or perineum (the area between the anus and scrotum). Open surgery requires a longer hospital stay but can more effectively treat very large prostate glands or complex cases.
  • Laparoscopic prostatectomy: A surgeon uses smaller incisions, guided by surgical instruments that have a camera on the end. A minimally invasive approach allows for an easier recovery with excellent results.
  • Robotic prostatectomy: A surgeon uses leading robotics technology to perform complex and delicate movements through tiny incisions — with incredible precision. Patients report less noticeable scarring, less pain and a faster recovery than with traditional open surgery.

Choosing LVHN for your prostatectomy

Men choose us for prostatectomy surgery because of our:

Dedicated prostate cancer care

We are the only center in the region with doctors dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of urologic cancer. You have access to the latest treatments and an extensive network of cancer specialists and support resources.

Robotics expertise

Robotics technology has revolutionized how surgeons perform prostatectomy surgery. But success largely depends on a surgeon’s skill. At LVHN, we’ve performed more than 13,500 robotics procedures in the past decade. Our urology surgeons are experts in robotics techniques and offer unmatched surgical precision and exceptional results.

Focus on men’s needs

Because of our doctors’ robotics expertise, we can often preserve erectile function after prostate cancer surgery. Our penile and pelvic floor rehab programs help men regain urinary control and sexual function more quickly in recovery.

Personalized care approach

We consider you an active member of your care team and we consider your preferences before making treatment decisions. We’ll explain what to expect before, during and after prostatectomy surgery so you feel confident in your care.
