At LVHN, we welcome visitors. You are an important part of the healing process for your loved ones, bringing needed support, encouragement and a comforting smile. To ensure your safety and that of our staff and other visitors, we have guidelines for visitors. Please take a few moments to review them below. 

General points about visiting

  • All visitors are expected to be healthy. If you are ill with a respiratory or gastrointestinal illness or recently exposed to COVID-19 or other infectious illness, we ask that you not visit the hospital.
  • Always use hand hygiene, standard precautions and personal protective equipment (such as face masks) as necessary when visiting. 
  • Face masks are optional in most areas at LVHN hospitals. They are required for anyone with a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, anyone with respiratory viral symptoms and transplant donors and recipients.
  • Only parents or legal guardians may directly receive information about patients age 18 and younger.
  • For the safety of our patients, visitors and colleagues, weapons are not permitted at any Lehigh Valley Health Network location. LVHN has no tolerance for aggressive behavior.
  • Smoking is not permitted inside or outside of the hospital.

Visiting adult patients

We may restrict visitation by family or guests if clinically necessary or if there is a concern for the safety of the patient, employees, staff or other visitors. In addition:

  • The patient, when able, determines who they want as visitors.
  • If the patient is unable to state their wishes, a representative or next of kin acts on the patient’s behalf.
  • The number of people who can visit the bedside at a given time is determined by the care team. Each individual unit or department has its own guidelines.
  • Family can visit anytime during the day or night, unless it adversely impacts the patient’s care or recovery.
  • In a semiprivate room, the roommate’s preferences are given special consideration.
  • Children may visit under the following conditions:
    • They are accompanied and supervised closely by an adult.
    • Prior arrangements are made for children (under 18) to stay overnight, and an adult (other than the patient) is always with them.
    • Prior arrangements have been made with the nursing staff for children to visit critically ill parents.
    • Siblings may view newborns at the window in the Newborn Nursery or visit with mother and baby in the mother’s room.

Behavioral health units

  • Patients in the adolescent behavioral health unit are permitted daily visits from one visitor per day.
  • One visitor per day is allowed in the adult behavioral health units on assigned days with BH1 and BH2 alternating visitation days.

Visiting women and children

All visitors (including parents) wanting to visit a child must obtain a visitor’s badge at the hospital’s welcome desk/security desk or at the Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital lobby entrance. You must display the badge prior to entering the women’s and children’s units. Visitors’ badges are only valid for the day they are issued. All visitors under age 18 in the women’s and children’s units must be accompanied by an adult.

  • The mother determines visitors and visiting hours.
  • No more than three visitors are permitted at the bedside. All visitors must complete the form titled “Photography and Support Person/Team in Labor and Delivery Room Unit.”
  • No one under age 6 is permitted in the labor and delivery unit.
  • For sibling visitors ages 6-17, the form titled “Sibling Visitors at Labor and Delivery Consent” must be completed by the patient, and they must be accompanied by an adult.

  • The mother may designate a support person to be at the bedside 24/7.
  • No more than three visitors are permitted at the bedside, at the mother’s discretion, during visiting hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • The support person or intended parent designated by the patient (wearing the second ID band) is welcome at the mother and newborn’s bedside 24 hours a day.
  • Another support person may relieve the designated person (with permission) if the first person is not able to stay through the night.
  • No more than three visitors are permitted at the bedside during visiting hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Pediatric patients in the emergency room are allowed visitors 24 hours a day. These visitors must be approved by the legal guardian or primary caregiver.
  • The number of visitors physically at the bedside may be limited based on the child’s situation and the care team’s decision.

  • Visitors (with parental request and LVHN ID bracelet) are welcome at the bedside 24 hours a day. Three visitors per bedside are permitted at a time, with one to two siblings allowed in addition.
  • Adult visitors to the NICU must have the parent/guardian present unless prior arrangements have been made.
  • Adult visitors to the NICU may not bring additional visitors along who are not on a designated list.
  • Siblings age 3 and older may visit during hospital visitation hours.

  • Visitors (with parental request and LVHN ID bracelet) are welcome at the bedside 24 hours a day. A total of four people are permitted at the bedside.
  • Overnight accommodations are limited to two parent/guardian/supportive adults, as long as it does not impede patient care.
  • Sleep accommodations at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Hazleton and LVH–Schuylkill are limited to one parent, guardian or supportive adult.
  • No children under age 12 are permitted to visit, unless they are a sibling of the patient.
  • Siblings and visitors other than parents/guardians/supportive adults may visit between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily, or during each individual hospital’s visiting hours.

Patients under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult/legal guardian, and visitors under age 18 must always be accompanied by an adult.

Weapons-free facilities

For the safety of our patients, visitors and colleagues, weapons are not permitted at any LVHN location. LVHN has no tolerance for aggressive behavior.
