Michael Sperling, MD, Recognized with AES Founders Award

Dr. Sperling is being honored for his countless contributions to epilepsy research, treatment and patient care

Michael Sperling, MD, Baldwin Keyes Professor of Neurology, Thomas Jefferson University; Vice Chair of Neurology Research; Division Chief, Epilepsy; Director, Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center; and Director, Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory, Jefferson Health, was honored by the American Epilepsy Society (AES) with the 2025 AES Founders Award during the Merritt Putnam Symposium Dec. 8. This honor is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to epilepsy research, treatment and care.

“This recognition is humbling, and I am deeply honored,” Dr. Sperling says. “I am proud of the many achievements I’ve been fortunate to be a part of during my career but equally grateful for the colleagues, trainees and teams who have made them possible. This award underscores the progress we’ve made together over many years to improve surgical techniques, therapies and patient care.”

As founder and director of the Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Dr. Sperling transformed epilepsy care through groundbreaking advances in surgery, neurophysiology and innovative therapies, improving outcomes for countless patients. He helped refine brain mapping and electroencephalogram (EEG) techniques and led clinical trials for treatments such as laser therapy and neurostimulation. Dr. Sperling is internationally recognized for his many contributions and continues to shape the future of epilepsy care through research, education and mentorship, guiding the next generation and sharing his expertise globally.

His impact is reflected in many prestigious honors, including the J. Kiffin Penry Award from the American Epilepsy Society in 2018, Ambassador for Epilepsy Award from the International League Against Epilepsy in 2021 and Herbert H. Jasper Award for lifetime achievement from the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society in 2024. He served as editor-in-chief for Epilepsia and held leadership roles in multiple professional societies, including presidencies of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society and Philadelphia Neurological Society.

Dr. Sperling remains dedicated to expanding access to innovative therapies and fostering collaboration to improve outcomes for people living with epilepsy. His work continues to set new standards in clinical care and research, underscoring the importance of evidence-based practice and compassionate, patient-centered care.
