About

Philosophy of care

I take care of one patient at a time. I listen to her and try to help her as a whole patient and emphasize. Over the years I’ve worked with people from all walks of life. When people need your help, you help every one of them.

Why I entered medicine

When I was in high school in India, I was in engineering, learning about electricity, wiring, carpentry and all sorts of things. Then I had a classmate whose mom died while she was giving birth. That really upset me. There were no OB/GYN physicians in India then. Babies were delivered by midwives or somebody’s grandmother, or anyone you could get to do it. Right then I decided to be an OB/GYN and entered into the medical field.

Community involvement

I have given lectures for women at different programs, educating them about newer treatment options to improve their lifestyle. I also participate in the March of Dimes.

Personal interests

I never lost that engineering school bug from high school. I love to fix things - lamps, television sets, even things that break down in the operating room. They say “Call Dr. Makhija; he’ll fix it.” When my daughter was in fourth grade, her teacher asked her what her daddy did. She said “he’s a fixer.” I guess she’s right.
