Our residency programs have been highly regarded by students, clinicians, and organization leaders for decades. Since joining Jefferson Health in 2024, our combined resources form one of the largest graduate medical education communities in Pennsylvania, and across the country.

Today, in the Lehigh Valley region, we offer 40 training programs (17 residencies and 23 fellowships) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

In 2026, we announced an expansion of Sidney Kimmel Medical College, which has awarded more than 31,000 medical degrees and has more living graduates than any other private medical school in the nation. A new regional campus is being constructed in Allentown to bring Jefferson’s unique education experience in person to Lehigh Valley students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each fiscal year there are approximately 400 trainees in our program.

LVHN is a scholarly community that values clinical and research experience in our candidates for residencies and fellowships. Having participated in such activities may strengthen your application, but it is not a prerequisite when applying.

LVHN is making efforts to allow candidates who may have interest in our educational programs the opportunity to spend time in our clinical environment. Several programs will support shadowing, observerships, and possible externships spanning one to four weeks. Please check or reach out to specific programs for details. During your training we are committed to continuing to support your education with a focus on scholarly activity. We will provide you with various resources to supplement your research efforts and projects. Many of our trainees, along with faculty mentors, publish their research, and trainees also present at national meetings. If you do not come to us with research experience, you will have the opportunity in one of our programs.

Jefferson Health sponsors H1-B and J-1 visas at its sole discretion for residents or fellows entering graduate medical, dental, and podiatric training programs in the Jefferson Abington, Jefferson Einstein, Jefferson New Jersey, Jefferson Northeast, Lehigh Valley, and Sidney Kimmel Medical College/Thomas Jefferson University Hospital programs.

Candidates who desire H1-B visa sponsorship must express that desire at the time of the program application. Only graduate medical training program candidates with USMLE Step III or COMLEX Level III passing results posted to the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), or other application portal, by Feb. 1 prior to the start of the PGY-1 year will be eligible for consideration of H1-B visa sponsorship.

Candidates with F-1 student visas are expected to extend the F-1 visa through the PGY-1 year using the Optional Practical Training year and must express the desire to be considered for H1-B visa sponsorship at the time of program application. Candidates holding F-1 visas must successfully pass USMLE Step III or COMLEX Level III before Dec. 1 of the PGY-1 training year to be eligible for consideration of an H1-B visa sponsorship. 

Candidates applying to Jefferson Health dental or podiatry programs will be considered individually.

Jefferson Health will indicate to candidates in writing prior to Match Day, its desire to sponsor an H1-B visa or J-1 visa. Candidates must not construe verbal communication as evidence of Jefferson Health’s desire to sponsor any visa.

LVHN recognizes the value of and supports international rotations and experiences for trainees. The approval of international rotations is predicated on the educational value and trainee safety during the experience. Please check with specific programs for details and policies on international rotations.
